We’ve infused menthol and camphor into our CBD Gel…but why? Read on and discover the therapeutic properties of both menthol and camphor.

When your shoulders, back, or even smaller joints hurt, finding immediate relief is a priority. That’s why many are leaving behind over-the-counter meds in favor of topical CBD products. Massaging CBD onto affected areas promotes healthy blood flow and helps the anti-inflammatory CBD to absorb faster. But what if that relief could take effect even faster? With ingredients like menthol and camphor, it can!

Our CBD Gel includes menthol and camphor because they promote a cooling effect that helps get rid of aches and pains more quickly. But that’s not all! Read on and learn more about these ingredients and how they provide therapeutic properties.

What is Menthol and How Does It Provide Relief?

In ancient times, menthol was extracted from mint oil for medicinal purposes. When applied topically, it causes a cooling sensation that has been known to reduce pain both on the surface of the skin and beneath it. This is good for a variety of ailments:

  • Minor arthritis pain
  • Back pain
  • Sore/strained muscles
  • Joint pain
  • Painful bruises

Menthol can still be extracted naturally today, but there are also manmade options. Either way, it still functions the same way.

According to the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, “Menthol is a selective activator of transient receptor potential melastatin-8 (TRPM8) channels and is also a vasoactive compound. As a topical agent, it acts as a counter-irritant by imparting a cooling effect and by initially stimulating nociceptors and then desensitizing them. Topically applied menthol may also activate central analgesic pathways.”

Essentially, menthol influences receptors that detect temperature. It first communicates “cold” to these receptors, but then they become desensitized. There’s also the potential that it can directly activate pain-relieving pathways. That’s why products with menthol often make the applied areas feel cold before they relieve pain. Luckily, the process is over and done with quickly and pain is soon relieved.

What is Camphor?

Camphor, or Cinnamomum camphora, is a terpene. If you’re unfamiliar, terpenes are the organic hydrocarbons found in most plants that dictate their aroma, flavor, and even some of their medicinal properties.

Not surprisingly, camphor oil is extracted from camphor trees. It has a particularly strong scent and flavor, and it’s quickly absorbed through the skin. These properties give it lots of therapeutic potential:

  • Pain relief
  • Skin irritation relief
  • May relieve chest congestion
  • May relieve some inflammatory conditions

When it comes to the skin, camphor is particularly useful. A 2015 study published by Phytotherapy Research showed that camphor was effective when it came to treating certain wounds along with wrinkles caused by ultraviolet light. While the study did use mice, their findings suggest, “…camphor to be a potent wound healing and antiwrinkle agent with considerable potential for use in cosmeceuticals”

It’s also an effective pain-reliever and anti-inflammatory for the skin. The Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences conducted a study in 2015 examining a spray with various botanical compounds (including both camphor and menthol). After fourteen days of treatment, results showed that the spray was effective in treating “mild to moderate cases on applying locally to the affected parts to relieve pain from different ailments.”

Cooling Relieving CBD Gel | Singy's CBD

We Use Menthol, Camphor, and CBD for Extra Relief!

We use all three ingredients because together they provide faster, more long-lasting relief!

CBD (cannabidiol) is a natural anti-inflammatory with some analgesic (pain-relieving) properties as well. When you use CBD products, the CBD interacts with your endocannabinoid system to promote these effects. It’s so effective that some athletes are ditching ibuprofen for CBD because of its efficacy in soothing strained muscles.

Learn how to use CBD topicals for maximum relief!

However, we want our customers to experience that relief even faster. A CBD topical can take fifteen to twenty minutes to fully take effect. Luckily, by combining CBD with menthol and camphor, a soothing and cooling sensation takes effect within moments. Plus, by the time the cooling sensation has worn off, the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of CBD will have taken effect for relief that lasts longer.

Plus, there’s no risk if you need to use both a topical and an oil. It’s often very difficult to get relief for deep muscle pain or even hip joints. Luckily, combining CBD Gel and CBD Oil can give you extra relief without the same risks associated with NSAIDs. By using both CBD Oil and CBD Gel, you’re helping your body reduce pain from the inside and the outside for maximum relief.
